Today is the feast of Joachim and Ann, parents of Mary, grandparents of Jesus.
In a sermon on the Nativity of Mary (from today’s Office of Readings) St. John Damascene exclaims:
Joachim and Ann, how blessed a couple!
Joachim and Ann, how blessed and spotless a couple!
Joachim and Ann, how chaste a couple!
Saint Joachim and Saint Ann, you who raised the Blessed and Immaculate Virgin Mary in such a way that she was found worthy to be the Mother of our Redeemer, pray for us to God, and obtain, I beg you, a special blessing for all grandparents this day!
